Social networking sites are all the rage these days and provide a platform for potential celebrities to flaunt their talent and get spotted. Check out these British stars who rose to fame quickly thanks to the internet.
Mia Rose
British and Portuguese singer-songwriter, Mia Rose first opened her YouTube account in 2006 during her Christmas break from university. She posted videos of her singing cover songs daily and before she knew it had a record number of subscriptions for a musician. She is reportedly both the No. 1 All Time Most Subscribed Musician in the UK, and has the No. 2 UK All Time Most Subscribed channel. Her own videos have been watched over a whopping 104 million times on YouTube.
Here she is singing Let Go which became the best selling download in Portugal on iTunes and went on to reach number 2 in the Portuguese charts.
Beckii Cruel
Rebecca Flint AKA Beckii Cruel rose to fame on YouTube where millions of people watched her shake her thaaang to J-Pop (Japanese Pop Music) and the theme tunes of anime cartoons. Like hundreds of thousands of students in Japan, Flint regularly took part in Cosplay and won fans by dressing up as various Manga characters. The girl from the Isle of Man soon found herself in Japan promoting her debut album and was even signed by Tojuma Japan Communications – how life can change.
Charlie McDonnell
20-year-old Charlie McDonnell has become an international star thanks to his unique and utterly hilarious YouTube videos. Duet With Myself, in which he uses camera tricks to appear twice on screen, has been seen over 5.87 million times and he has just become the first British person to generate a million regular viewers on the social networking site thanks to his web channel charlieissocoollike.
The talented chap has also enjoyed plenty of success in the USA with videos such as How to Speak English and How to be English. The latter was so popular it appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show. Charlie’s videos have been viewed more than 170m times, so why not take a look and see what all the fuss is about.
Ronan Parke
Ronan Parke, who became the runner up on Britain’s Got Talent (2011) reportedly posted videos of him singing on YouTube prior to the reality TV series. The young star apparently said that after posting the clips, he was invited along to perform at a local dance show and after a positive response from the crowd was convinced he should apply for BGT. He might have slowly been climbing his way through the ranks, but he is certainly not under the radar anymore.
Bryony Matthewman AKA Paperlilies
Bryony Mathewman AKA Paperlilies found herself somewhat of a star after she decided to create her very own Zombie internet movie. After making a lot of friends on YouTube, she thought it would be a great idea to get the online community together to make something “huge” and asked them to contribute towards the film.
People literally jumped at the idea and Mathewman was soon flooded with ideas, tips and suggestions of how to make her project great. A huge number of viewers logged onto her YouTube channel to find out the latest gossip and follow her instructions which she posted on internetzombiemove.com. The BBC even heard about the idea, set up a website and made a documentary about it for BBC3.
