The Guitar, The Piano… and SEO

In the SEO (search engine optimization) world, things can get very very choppy. What I mean by that, is that everything in SEO is done to counteract what Google is doing with their algorithm. It is a huge game of cat and mouse, and one that even the smartest SEO’s out there find can be very intimidating, stressful, and sometimes unsuccessful.

That is because Google is hiring people everyday to stop people from being able to manipulate their search engines and therefore get to the top of the SERPs (search engine results page) in a hurry.

In search engine optimization, the creativity side of things usually stands in developing the process, developing ways that people are going to be able to get to the top of the SERPs, and therefor are able to make the most money.

The Art of Search Engine Optimization

There is tons of creativity in SEO, there always has been, there always will be. In fact, there may be more creativity in upscale and advanced SEO than there is in creating the search engines themselves!

That being said, since the value and creativity in SEO comes in when you are just trying to “game the system” you will find that even if the SEO does get it’s content to rank at the top of the SERPs, the content that is there has been created by the system.

The value in a lot of SEO is not the content, it is how you are going to get that content to the top of the SERPs, and therehfore, good SEO’s can get somewhat poor content to the top of the SERPs if they use the right strategies.

So when it comes to the Internet world, Google has created a whole new monster when it comes to the reason why people even create web sites. More and more people are coming more and more savvy everyday, that if you can get to the top of the SERPs, then you are going to be able to make a lot of money.

The Repercussions of #1 Rank at Google

If your web site is at the number one postion of Google, then you are basically getting a huge referral from the largest search engine on this planet (way more that 50% of the market share in the U.S. – floating somewhere around 80% all the time). And since people trust Google so much, you can be assured that people will trust your web site since the “best” search engine in the world just put them there.

SEO causes all sorts of problems for Google. They want what will have the most value to the people that are using their site at the top of the SERPs while SEO’s just want to get to the top of the SERPs so that they can make money by monetizing their sites. Most people can get to the top by hiring an SEO company to perform seo services for their site like a link building service. And Google knows this.

Where is the problem in all of this?

Well I guess there really is no “problem” with all of this, except for the fact that it is extremely hard for Google to get the sites they want at the top of the SERPs when they have to battle SEO’s all day and night long.

What this means however, is that the best content usually isn’t seen by the masses. This was true before the search engines, and will remain true forever. The masses will always see content that has a combination of quality and the right leverage and push.

SO wait a second, what does the title of this article have to do with any of this?

Drawing Parallels with the Music Industry

The same can be said for much of the music industry. 25-50 years ago the music industustry was dominated by the Piano, the Guitar, live performances, and making sure that you can sound good (very good) when all of the technology is stripped away.

Today, the music industry is totally dominated by hip hop and rap music. Why is this? Well mainly because it is has the best ROI (return on investment). It is A) very cheap to create and B) very cheap to sell. But have you ever been to a rap concert?

When the whole goal of your music is to get it sound good on computers, and use computers to do so, you forget about the actual sound of it in real life, and this makes for a pretty harsh sounding “real life” sound – to say the least. Others would say “absolutely terrible.”

The Musical Take-Away in the Age of Social Media

Yet music in today’s world is a lot more about the social experience (it always has been but music just had to be a lot better back in the day for people to go and have a good time). And with YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, it is very easy to see how people like Rebecca Black can easily become famous so much faster.

When you are solely playing the piano and the guitar, and aren’t using computers to generate sounds, but rather organic souds used against the air and tools that you have created, you get a lot better quality of content rather than if you just worried about how much money your music will make or how the masses will feel about your music.

The music industry and the SEO are one in the same, work hard for the process, because that process will make you money, so what the masses will always see, is what will always make the most money.
