Nothing is more relaxing than sitting with a glass of wine in the evening in your favourite holiday destination, watching a beautiful sunset. There are countless places all over the world where the sunsets are particularly beautiful. Here are just some of the best examples.

Ayers Rock, Northern Territory, Australia

Ayers Rock is one of the most spectacular places to enjoy watching the sun go down. Its red sandstone reflects beautifully in the clouds, giving them a pink lining and the sun’s rays make the blood-orange colour of the rock positively glow. The sunset is best viewed in the summer months as it can be extremely cold during the winter nights.

The Maldives

You can view the pristine beach and sparkling turquoise waters against the backdrop of a wonderful sunset in the Maldives. The North Malé Atoll is one of the best places to relax and see the sun go down behind the crystal-clear lagoons.

Maldives holidays are favoured for the draw of year round-sun with temperatures being fairly consistent all year round but January to April is drier with calm waters, allowing you to appreciate the reflection of the sunset in the ocean.

Academia Bridge, Italy

The Academia Bridge lies over the Grand Canal and the sunsets are spectacularly reflected in the still waters. The sun’s rays light up the 15th-century architecture of Venice and you can also take trips along the canal if you hire a gondola.

You can visit in the summer months or avoid the crowds in the autumn, when the fog also gives the place an ethereal atmosphere.

Cuba, Caribbean

Cuba is one of the most romantic places to catch a sunset. You can enjoy it from the picturesque countryside or from the Malecon Seafront Avenue. You could choose a mountain view if you travel inland. The 18th-century rooftops in Havana’s Old Town can also provide a stunning backdrop as the sun goes down.

The best time of year to visit is between December and May for dry and sunny days as well as spectacular sunsets in the evenings.

Thailand

The sunsets in Koh Phangan are said to be the best in Thailand and there are several places to enjoy them. Try one of the bars built on the side of the hills or one of the beaches on the coastline. The west coast of the island is where the best views can be found.

December to March is a great time to head to Thailand on holiday as there is low rainfall and the monsoon season occurs during May and October in Koh Phangan.

Istanbul, Turkey

There are several rooftop terrace restaurants and bars in Istanbul from which you can view a beautiful sunset over the large domed buildings and mosques. As Istanbul spans the Bosporus, you will also get a view of the sunset reflected in the sparkling water.

Visit Istanbul around spring or autumn when there are several fun-filled festivals to enjoy well into the evenings.

Mallory Square, Key West, Florida

Sip on a cocktail and gaze at the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico. A favourite spot for locals, there is a nightly arts festival held here called the Sunset Celebration which includes street performances, arts and crafts as well as other exhibitors. Mallory Square is best during the summer months when there is a real buzz around the area.

Masai Mara, Kenya

A well-known safari destination, Masai Mara is a fantastic place to visit if you love wildlife and want to see the sun set over the vast plains. You can watch elephants, leopards, buffalo and rhinoceros against the backdrop of a blazing sunset for an experience of a lifetime. To see the annual migration of the wildebeest, the time to visit is between June and August.

Egypt

The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April as the summer months can be uncomfortably hot for some. Cairo in particular is a fantastic place to watch the sun go down behind the majestic pyramids. You can also enjoy a trip down the Nile at sunset for the ultimate luxurious experience.

Santorini, Greece

The breathtaking views of Ios Island and the Aegean Sea can be seen from Santorini in Greece. The beautiful sunset can be admired from many points all over the island and several of the restaurants and hotels have been built on the cliffs for this reason alone.
