Now, there’s a lovely idea. See that guy in the picture, kissing the tree? His name his apparently David Horvitz, and he’s a regular salt-of-the-earth New Yorker who was able to draw my attention (as well as thousands others) with a rather ingenious personal website.

You see, within his cyberspace lair, Mr. Horvitz is running one of the most original and fascinating businesses I’ve ever seen. He’s obviously a person who enjoys travelling, photography and poetry, and he’s found a nice way to get total Internet strangers to support his musings, while getting something tangible in return.

The premise is quite simple and fascinating; David has listed various things he’s willing to do, provided someone offers a matching donation. The activities he’s offering include kissing a tree and mailing a photo to the contributor, buying food to random homeless people with donation money, taking a photo of the sky in a certain day and mailing it, or writing an apology letter to someone he knows and mailing a copy.

That’s only the small stuff he’s willing to do for a small amount of money, however this guy really flexed his creative muscles into coming with with a huge diversity of activities. Provided he gets appropriate funding, he’ll go out of his way and travel to distant locations, retrieving sand from Okinawan islands, learning how to brew Japanese green tea, or just go as far down as he can in South America.

This is a project I support wholeheartedly, and I wish some rich person will stumble across his homepage and support some of the most expensive activities he’s putting on the market. In the meanwhile, I think I’ll make a modest donation in exchange for a secret or a photograph of the sky. If you want to learn more about this fascinating art-project of sorts, check David Horvitz‘ official page.
