Brace yourselves, dear readers: for today I will tell you about what may possibly be the strangest musical instrument you have ever heard of. And you know what’s strangest? You’ve probably already *heard* its sound, and you never knew what it was. Also, just in case you’re wondering, this is no tech novelty: in fact, was actually invented over 100 years ago!
The theremin is quite a peculiar instrument, and it’s rather unique because it’s played without any kind of direct contact; in appearance, it’s a relatively plain device: it looks like a wooden case with two antennas stuck on either side. The antennas emmit an electromagnetic field which can be manipulated through different hand positions and gestures, and it produces a rather distinctive sound, not unlike a weeping electronic violin-cello thing from outer space.
To watch someone play the theremin feels quite puzzling at first, but after a while the whole thing actually makes sense. In case you’re wondering why the music produced by theremins sounds so familiar, that’s because this instrument has been used extensively in the movie industry, particularly in alien movies. That’s no wonder, considering the strange, eerie, and also charming (in a way) sound it produces!
