You may not even like Google Chrome, but you’ll love the Google Chrome Technical documentation!

To be honest? I’m not even a big fan of Google Chrome, the browser that was developed in-house by the big G and released to the public a few months ago. Granted, it’s an interesting project, but I already have a foxy browser to which I’m commited and fully satisfied, thankyou very much! Regardless, Chrome is still an interesting browser (much better than Internet Explorer, which I utterly despise) and there are progressively more people out there switching to this browser.

Well, as much as I’m not into Google Chrome, I could not help but notice they’ve released a wonderful technical documentation in comic book format, which is so good it made me want to use their browser for some time, back in the day. Whether or not you’re a Chrome adept, this is something you’ll want to check it. It was authored by comics visionaire Scott McCloud , a creator whom I very much admire (in fact I’ll make a follow up post on him soon enough) and in my opinion, it’s the single best piece of software documentation that ever saw the light of day! Never allow your websites to become a sand castle metaphor!

Okay, I’m just gonna tell this once, and for a change I’m discussing a serious matter… but first, I want to ask you to watch the following video, end to end:

As you can see, sand castles may be quite pretty to look at, but there’s something quite disturbing about these structures: how easily they can be destroyed. Now, this is not really about sand castles, but all the while I’m using this metaphor to try and imprint something very important in the mind of all aspiring web masters out there:

You should not let your websites become a sand castle metaphor.

This may sound like an obtuse comparison, but hold on with me. Truth of the matter, there are several ways of making this error… some of them are more elusive and hard to avoid, but regardless there’s one single sure-shot way of making your on line empire quite similar with a sand castle. That’s building it on a frail foundation… and the foundation to every website is the web hosting company it stands upon. So, unless you want to build an Internet empire that’s pretty to look at but easy to tear apart, you should get yourself a solid web host.

Voice recognition and the age when keyboards grew obsolete!

Have you noticed that 10 years ago, there wasn’t too many people who used computers, but today they’ve gotten so widespread it could be argued there aren’t so many people who *don’t* use computers? Sometimes I get wondering how it’ll be a decade from now, and one of the things that I find most intriguing has to do with the new interface technologies: I feel that the as the usage of computers will get more pervasive in the future, the way we interact with the machine will become increasingly more sophisticaded and altogether different.

For example, I have a feeling that in the future, keyboards will be rendered progressively obsolete. How is that possible, you ask? Two words: voice recognition. I mean, how cool is that? I’m speaking of a future where we’ll actually talk with our computers, controlling most operation with our voice including typing words. Can you imagine the possibilities? For some people it might sound awkard at first (I mean, try saying something to your computer right now, as though it was actually listening, and see how that makes tou feel like), but I’m telling you this is a future trend, and it will bring about many changes in the way man interacts with machine.

Well, as a matter of fact (this is something you might not be aware of), there’s already voice recognition software out on the market which is quite effective. Myself, I used to think this technology was still quite primitive, but after experiencing Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Preferred, I’m definitely convinced that in a few years, voice recognition will be the hot new thing – and I get a feeling that Dragon speaking may be a step ahead in the right direction. Judging from the NY Times Review of Dragon NaturallySpeaking, I suppose I’m not the only one who thinks that way.

Myself, I’m about to get started on my new experiment: writing a few posts out loud, leaned back in my chair and liviing it large through the fast paced contemporary days we live by… thanks (in more than a way) to Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Standard
