What happens when you place a deeply loving couple in the top of a mountain, detached from society, just the two of them for most of their lives? Well, if the guy’s a hopeless romantic, chances are he’ll dedicate most of his life to a project simultaneously impressive and foolish, such as as hand-carving nearly 6.000 steps down the mountain, just to attend the wife’s convenience. This is a true story which is currently regarded as one of the most romantic Chinese stories; you can read about it here, so I won’t spend my time just retelling the whole thing. Instead, I’m going for an alternate approach.

You see… some of us, cynical westerners may easily fail to see the true beauty behind this act of love. One could reason thus: what’s with all the pampering, anyway? Isn’t that the same as diminishing the opposite sex? Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to get the dame a nice pair of sturdy hiking boots, or even some multi-purpose Hunting Boots, so she could get to actually do something, rather than sitting atop the lonely mountain for her entire life, wondering why her loving husband would spend his time carving steps she barely intended to use anyway, rather than just spending more time *with* her?

I guess it’s all a matter of perspective, once you think of it. Certainly, spending a lifetime carving thousands of steps upon solid rock mountainside is definitely a beautiful gesture, but wouldn’t the time have been better spent just by keeping the old lady company, taking her along for daily wilderness adventures, while telling her some nice stories, cuddling and bringing her some flowers? Granted, that wouldn’t have been as memorable or noteworthy to external observers, but does real love actually require such futile external recognition? Tell me what you think!
