No matter how stylishly you’ve decorated your bedroom, a messy closet can turn your private oasis into an unwelcome eyesore. A messy closet can not only make it difficult for you to find what you want to wear for the day, but it can make you want to avoid your bedroom altogether. If your closet looks like a disaster zone, it’s time to whip it into shape. Here are five great ways to ensure that your closet isn’t the focal point of the room for all of the wrong reasons:

1. Doors

One of the quickest ways to dress up a closet is to remove the doors and hang curtains. Curtains can lend a stylish look to your closet and can be easily changed to match your décor. For an added bit of interest, low voltage lighting can be added behind the fabric. Look for light colored or thin fabrics that will let the light shine through.

2. Shelves

If you’re like many people, you’ve got one shelf in your closet that is crammed to the brim with sweaters, boxes and anything else that can be tossed up there. Consider adding more shelves to give your closet an organized look. Shelves are great for items that need to be folded and offer ample storage for shoe boxes.

3. Rods

When your closet is messy, even hanging clothes will end up wrinkled. Give your hangers some space with a few extra rods. If you hang rods at different levels in your closet, you can organize your hanging clothes more easily. For instance, dress pants and jeans can be hung on the lower rod, and T-shirts and button downs can be hung on the upper rod.

4. Drawers

Most people don’t stop to think that drawers can be great additions to a closet. By adding a unit of drawers, you can free up space in your room by removing the dresser that you’ve been relying on. Perfect for underwear, lingerie, socks, belts, T-shirts, and shorts, add just four or five drawers and you’ll be amazed at the amount of space that you gain.

5. Shoe Racks

Does it take you 15 minutes in the morning to find a matching pair of shoes to put on? If your shoes have been banished to the space underneath the bed or piled in the bottom of your closet, it’s time to pull them out and get them organized. Whether you find a shoe rack to hang on the back of your closet door or to sit on the floor of your closet, organizing your shoes will not only keep them neat and tidy, but it will save you precious time in the morning.

A messy closet is an unsightly time-waster.
