Life will be full of stress. We encounter stressful situations at work, at home, at school or at social events. That’s something that can not be avoided.
But while we can’t avoid having stress in our lives, we can, however, learn to cope with these stressful situations and not let them overwhelm us and the way we live. Here, we list some tips on how one can deal with stress.
Changing the Situation
Most of the stressful situations we find ourselves in are actually situations we can avoid or avoid from repeating in the future. There are situations that can be changed. It’s when you understand that those situations doesn’t necessarily have to occur will you see how some things are actually within your control , making it less stressful.
Does having too many things to do keeping you from accomplishing tasks? Learn to say no. When you feel like you’ve got your hands full as it is and can’t take on more responsibilities without compromising the outcome of present responsibilities, politely turn down requests. Taking on more than you can handle is guranteed to cause you stress.
Speaking of responsibilities, time management is of the essence. Learning to prioritize your list of tasks will significantly reduce stress. Try performing tasks that are most important or more difficult to accomplish first when the day’s just started and you have more energy to work on rather than putting them off for later. Delaying a task or procrastinating will only cause you further stress.
Changing Your Attitude
There will be times, though, when some stressful situations can’t be avoided. When this is the case, it’s best to try to change your attitude towards the situation instead. We have to admit, that some things are beyond our control. A loss of a dear friend, a heartbreak, a natural disaster are just some examples of situations wherein changing our attitude may just be the best thing to do.
Focus on the positive and don’t try to control what can be controlled. What this means is that, in every situation, there is always something good that actually comes out from it. Try to dwell on those good things and use it as an opportunity avoid to grow. Also, don’t sweat the small stuff. Assess the situation and determine whether it’s worth getting upset over or not.And when applicable, share your feelings with friends you trust. Taking time to unload your thoughts and feelings helps you deal with the situation, and the stress it brings, much better.
Of course, dealing with stress doesn’t have to be a reactive process. Some stressful situations can really be avoided and your responses to unavoidable stressful situation can be reinforced if you maintain a healthy physical, mental and spiritual state.
Learn to take a well-deserved break. Make sure you allot enough time within your day to take a break, clear your mind and recharge. Try to do somehting you love to do everyday. Having a bit of me time allows you to enjoy life and appreciate the joy doing things you like to do brings.
It’s crucial, too, to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Avoid trying to deal with stress by eating junkfood, drinking too much alcohol or smoking cigarettes. These may bring temporary relief but may cause long-term damage to your body instead. When it comes to your food and drink intake, moderation is key. You can take a few shots of espresso everyday from espresso machines to give you that extra boost but taking in too many or being caffeine-dependent may actually make your energy and lose sleep instead.
