While we can all recognize the value in leaping off the sofa and heading out for several hours of pumping iron at the gym, the sofa’s just too darned comfy, and with cable television there’s always something good on the telly. The problem is, even the lazy amongst us want to keep in shape. Thankfully, there are a few ways you can up your fitness level without having to pull on your trainers and tracksuit.
1 – Clench Your Buttocks
Butt clenches were brought to our attention when Chandler used them for office exercise on Friends. When you clench and release your buttocks you are contracting and then relaxing your gluteus maximus and gluteus minimus muscles – that is, your butt muscles. With a whole lot of repetition you can maximise the amount of junk in your trunk.
2 – Fidget!
According to scientific research, fidgeters can burn almost an extra 400 calories a day! Not bad at all. Now you just need to figure out how to make yourself a fidgeter. A whole lot of strong black coffee might help.
3 – Do Some Yoga
It seems like all the celebs are either devotees of yoga or fans pilates. When you’re watching the beautiful people on television take a leaf out of their books with some yoga. Don’t worry, you won’t have to get out of your seat, there are various routines of seated yoga that are just perfect for performing while you sit on the sofa.
4 – Think Really Hard About Exercise
It might seem unbelievable, but research has shown that just thinking really hard about lifting weights can actually beef up your muscles. It turns out that just thinking about weightlifting sends signals to your muscles so that over a few weeks they become bigger and stronger – and the increased strength lasts for another 3 months after you stop your “exercise” regime.
5 – Weigh Yourself Down
So even the most dedicated of couch potatoes sometimes have to get up in order to fetch a drink or go to the bathroom. Make these little excursions count by weighing down your arms and legs with velcro-weights. strapped around your wrists and ankles, they will ensure that the little bit of walking you do is as beneficial as possible. Or, if that’s too much effort, make your pencil really heavy and make those finger muscles sweat.
Okay, so you probably won’t become Mr Universe or a supermodel just by following these little bits of advice, but it’s got to be better than nothing, after all. Right?
