When you strike a ball using your golf club, it would start to accumulate dirt and get scratches. Eventually, this would cause your golf club to rust. Well, if you don’t want to get your clubs damaged, it would be best to regularly clean it to prevent it from rusting.
Golf clubs need to be cleaned after every round. You can wipe off the club face with a clean towel after each shot and scrape excess dirt out of the grooves using a golf tee. But aside from that, extra effort is needed in between rounds to make sure that your golf clubs are well maintained so that you can use them longer.
So how can you get rid of scratches on your golf clubs? Here are simple steps how to do that:
A. Cleaning and repairing crown scratches
1. First, wipe down the club face and shaft using water and soap and a clean rag. This method would already be able to remove excess dirt and fertilizer which would stick on your club while you’re playing golf. Make sure that you apply extra vigor on scratched areas. You can use a stiff plastic brush for cleaning this. Then dry the club head with a clean, soft towel.
2. Next, spray each club face with a lubricant. Using a toothbrush, scrub the club face particularly in portions where rust is already appearing. Then wipe the club using a clean, dry cloth.
3. Third, use a tape to mask around the scratch but leave around 1/8 inch uncovered. Shake your club head paint bottle so that paint will be mixed well. Then brush a thin coat of paint in one direction to cover the unmasked area. However, if the scratch is too deep, let the first coat dry up and then apply a second thin coat.
4. You can also soak the 600 grit sandpaper for 15 minutes and then smooth out the dried paint in one direction. Use a clean towel to dry the club head. Then remove the masking tape and rub it down with a soft polishing towel.
5. Wait for at least two days to let the paint cure. You can opt to apply one coat of car polish and then shine.
B. Cleaning and repairing unpainted sole scratches
1. For unpainted sole scratches you can clean the sole of the club thoroughly using plastic brush, soap and water. After doing this, wipe the club head with a clean soft rag.
2. Next, mask off the side of the club head with tape to prevent accidental scratches to other portions of the club.
3. You can then soak the 220 grit sandpaper for 15 minutes, then buff out small scratches on the sole plate in one direction. If your club has got heavy scratches, you can use a rotary tool with a sanding attachment. Just apply light pressure and work on one direction. Follow this up using a wet 400 grit sandpaper.
4. Finally, rub the club with a soft, clean rag. You can use paint to cover any painted markings on the sole and then let this dry for a day. Once dry, you can now remove the masking tape.
