When it comes to comedy films, many are literally a dime a dozen. The same tired jokes are repeated again and again, and plot lines are recycled from one movie to another. Every once in a while, however, a truly genius comedy will come around that leaves audiences howling with laughter. The following comedies are some of the best of the best, and are guaranteed to make you laugh until you cry.
A smash-hit released earlier this year, Bridesmaids was produced by Apatow Productions, the same company known for hits like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up. Saturday Night Live cast member Kristen Wiig stars as a single woman named Annie, who is asked to be the maid of honor for her childhood friend Lillian’s (Maya Rudolph) upcoming wedding. Hilarity ensues when Helen (Rose Byrne) tries to win the coveted maid of honor position. The other quirky bridesmaids round out a hilarious cast of ladies who will keep you laughing until the credits roll.
2. The Hangover
The Hangover was a huge hit in 2009, raking in over $400 million at the global box office. The movie follows Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), and Alan (Zach Galifianakis) as they awaken following a bachelor party in Las Vegas. The hijinks commence as the boys try to find their friend Doug (Justin Bartha), who is supposed to be getting married the following day.
3. Meet the Parents
When Gaylord “Greg” Focker (Ben Stiller) heads to his girlfriend Pam’s (Teri Polo) parents home, he is surprised to meet her parents (Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner). Pam’s sister is slated to get married that weekend, and Greg causes problem after problem. Will he ultimately succeed in his plan of asking Pam to marry him, or will the insanity cause the would-be marriage to be broken off before it ever has the chance to take place?
4. American Pie
American Pie has become a classic in the world of American teen comedies since its release in 1999. When four high school students make a pact to lose their virginity before their graduation, ridiculous events ensue. Each student goes about trying to convince someone else to have sex with them, in order to fulfill the pact on prom night. From potty humor to slap stick, American Pie has a taste of just about everything.
5. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
Starring Saturday Night Live alum Will Ferrell, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is a satirical look at the 1970s. Ferrell stars as the title character, a successful anchorman in San Diego. After a brief liaison with Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) goes sour, Ron’s career is sabotaged by his angry ex. By modifying the content of his teleprompter, she is able to trick Ron into insulting the city on live television, leading to his firing by the head of the station. Will Ron be able to pick up the broken pieces and recover his position as the most popular anchor in San Diego?
