Just in case you’ve been missing some old-fashioned comics reading, here’s a nice suggestion that will keep you covered for a while. Subnormality is actually a slice-of-life kind of web comic, with an interesting twist: what if “I don’t get it” was a badge of honor? By scouring the thick archives, you’ll randomly encounter some genuine pearls of cartoon goodness, some of which I’m using to illustrate this article. As you can see, this is hardly a normal kind of webcomic experience - it’s one of those readings where you never really know what to expect, when you visit the website.

about the author

In case you’re wondering about the actual plot and setting supporting this publication… well. As far as I can tell, subnormality is a non-sequitur comic following the ordeals of several sub-ordinary characters engaging quite sub-regular daily life activities. All in all, this comic is a great thought-provoking reminder of our own inherited sub-normality, this is a positive thing if you ask me; that’s because us humans sure tend to get over our heads once in a while. Consistently exhibiting a sharp sense of humor and no-frills social criticism, the author has obviously succeeded in fashioning a very distinct and peculiar voice and style. In my opinion, the absence of a standard cast and linear setting only adds up to the reading experience - it’s not as if this comic doesn’t make sense; actually it usually evokes a very unique and characteristic kind of reasoning, one many people can obviously relate with.

nothing to do this week

At times wordy and ranting, other times visual and succinct, Subnormality is a beautiful example of the unique experience webcomics have to offer, provided the creators are capable of stretching their imaginations and thinking outside the box. And subnormality’s author Winston Rowntree is obviously getting quite proficient in the subtle art of deviating the norm; for that we salute him, and wholeheartedly wish for a continued success and recognition. Having said that, dear reader, maybe it’s about time you go on and check it out for yourself.
