I just found a passionate website concerning the ancient art of sword-swallowing which provides much interesting information, while dismissing some myths regarding this dangerous performance. To be honest, I was having an inner debate regarding whether I should post something like this here, since I don’t want to encourage anyone to have a go at swallowing sharp objects. However, I suppose that - if there is someone out there with such a life-threatening predisposition, they might as well do it with some information. So, in order to become educated in your death-defying pleasure, make sure to read trough this.
All in all, sword swallowing is an ancient art that involves controlling the gag reflex which induces coughing when an object touches the inner throat. After you’ve achieved this degree of self-control, it’s all a matter of inserting objects further down your throat until you no longer feel excruciating pain. Once you’ve achieved this feat, then you can start using real swords. Sword swallowing is not a magic trick, it’s more of an art involving bodily control. It’s extremely dangerous and painful (especially while you’re learning), and many people have lost their lives or ruined their health doing it. This is why there’s only about 200 performers in the world who can do it.
For more detailed information, you can also check the wiki article, or the sword swallower’s official webpage. Hopefully, all of this information will encourage you not to ever try putting blades down your own throat!
