The “swiss spaghetti harvest” is rated #1 in this cool list of the top 100 April’s fool hoaxes I just stumbled upon. As the history goes, this hoax was developed by a prestiged BBC news show, tough a news piece which forecasted a very good spaguetti farming year: “thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop”. The most amazing thing is that many people were really caught off -guard regarding the true origin of spaghetti, as they flooded the station with letters of inquiry. Apparently, at this time (1950’s) it was regarded as an exotic food, so it’s not really that surprising many people believed spaghetti could really grow in trees.
