The beach cruiser is a special type of bicycle that has become progressively popular for a number of reasons. They are usually built with heavy steel frame bikes and thick tires; while these materials don’t allow much speed, the beach cruiser makes up for that in stability – in fact this is the reason why it’s called beach cruiser, because it’s possible to ride this type of bike in compacted sand. This quality makes it the perfect vehicle for riding with great comfort and stability along the seashore, as well as any flat surface.

The original cruiser bike (which was invented in the 1950′s) usually only provided you with a single gear, and in order to brake, you needed to pedal backwards. I’ve tried riding one of these a few years ago, and I can assure you it’s quite fun; despite the lack of speed, it makes for a noticeably smooth ride, which is very pleasant for sight-seeing. Recently, some lighter models have been introduced, some of which provide multiple gears; however, the main purpose of cruiser bikes is still providing a comfortable, steady trip.
