Kefir is a fermented milk drink that is created by mixing milk with kefir grains and letting the mixture rest at room temperature for over 12 hours. The result is a liquid that resembles liquid yogurt that can be used for a variety of culinary purposes. Not only does it taste good, but it also offers great health benefits, and that’s not even the end of it. The cool thing about kefir grains is that it’s basically a bacterian community that grows as it ferments the milk (or whatever beverage you’re using - soy milk, coco milk, even fruit juice will possibly activate the magical properties of the kefir); the thing is, as you use kefir grains to ferment your beverage, the amount of grains will increase, so you’ll end up with more grains than you began with. Moreover, the same batch of kefir can be used in several fermentations, so it’s all good!
Kefir grains aren’t supposed to be sold (they’re supposed to be shared and passed around), so I don’t really know if there are any online stores that will sell the grains. However, I’ve been told there are websites online where people are willing to share their crops. When I find a reliable source, I’ll make sure to keep you posted; otherwise, I’ll welcome any comments with relevant links.
