Have a nice day out of time!

admin July 25th, 2007

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Today is a very special day, in the Mayan calendar: it’s the day out of time. As I told you before, this is a very special calendar, which is also known as the 13 moon calendar. Since each moon takes 28 days and 28*13 = 364, it’s easy to undertand why there’s a day out of time, which is synched to the 25th of July.

As the biggest holiday within the international 13 Moon Calendar community
“The Day out of Time” also known as “Galactic Freedom Day,” is always synchronized with July 25th. This day is an extremely powerful opportunity for global focus with planetary kin who are dedicated to establishing a New Time of Peace on Earth and the Creative Emergence of Galactic Culture and Planet Art for the Benefit of All Beings!

We invite you to take this opportunity to join the festivities in whatever ways you feel called - whether gathering with your community or simply observing the occasion with your intention. Regardless of your responsibilities on this day, please focus
on “stopping business as usual” and tune in to the telepathic field as we collectively energize the Victory of Love!”

(for more information, visit 13moons.com)

Tomorrow the new Mayan year of the White Lunar Lizard kicks in; hopefully this will be a great year for the worldwide peace movement, and I felt obliged to make a tribute, however small it may be. Don’t forget the 13 moon calendar is much more than a trendy new-age curiosity: it’s a full-fledged life philosophy based on ancient wisdom; it’s a way of life that revolves around quite positive ideas. Hopefully next year, I’ll be able to make something more elaborate than a mere humble post, and also hopefully I’ll start living up to the ideal which is conveyed through ths magical calendar right away.

I’d like to invite everyone to to take this chance to reflect on the good things of life, and how they can help make the world a better place, simply by learning how to get along with the fellow human beings.

The Police: back together to protect us from bad music!

admin July 25th, 2007

The police reunited!

Do you love the Police? I mean, who doesn’t, considering they exist to protect and serve the citizens - at least theoretically. Anyway, today’s slice is not about *that kind* of police, but rather about the renowned british rock band, known by such huge hit singles as “Roxanne”, “Message in a bottle” and “Every breath you take”. Yeah, it’s Sting’s old band, you got that right. Actually, it’s Sting’s current band, since they reunited in 2007, much to the excitement of fans all over the world.

If you want a reminder of some old-fashioned musical goodness, go ahead and click here to open an awesome banner where you can watch The Police’s videos, listen to tracks from The Police’s new 2 cd hits collection, enter to win a trip to NYC to see The Police in concert and even view details about their current world tour.

By using the cool eyewonder banner, you’ll have access to detailed information about “The Police”, including videos, jukebox, tour, contests, ringtones, and newsletter. The Police CD is a 2-disc best-of compilation that was released June 5th; this is a special edition including a nice vintage poster. I’ve already ordered my copy, and I figured some you people would be delighted to learn about this. Whenever you feel opressed with the bad music from nowaways, just make sure to call the Police!

Drawn to life, drawn with lines.

admin July 24th, 2007

When I think of it, one of the things I like best about life is the ability to dream and reinvent our reality. As far as I can see, this is probably mankind’s greatest blessing: we are able to dream and realize our ambitions in a way no other animal can; doutblessly, this is our greatest triumph, as well as our greatest tragedy. Today’s video provides indeed a triumphant display of the creative power of dreams, titled “drawn with lines”; this is an exquisite display of cratsmanship and rotoscoping animation. You should really watch the video through, since it provides a lively vision of what life really is about; have you noticed the expression “created by the creator”? . This is something that I keep wondering all the time: what is life *really* about, you know? And the more I think of it, the more I get the feeling life is about dreaming and waking up to larger dreams. Such as this:

note: I’ve contacted the author, and he told me this project was developed during the course of 8 months, with a total 1300+ drawings, which he traced over live footage. Quite an impressive feat for a single individual, wouldn’t you agree? Maybe one of these days, I’ll post and interview with the author. Stay tuned!

Homer’s Mystical Journey.

admin July 23rd, 2007

If you suppose this is a post about the revered “the Iliad/the Odissey” by Homer, then you might as well stop reading. No, wait! Since you’re at here anyway, why don’t you take a break from your scholarly endeavours and take the chance to make some serious thinking about inner travels? Today’s slice of life is a video clip from the yellowest TV show in history, The Simpsons. In this episode, Homer tries to prove he’s the spice of town by eating chief Wigglum’s extra-spicy imported chili peppers. The thing is, those chili’s really pack a punch, so first time Homie-boy takes one, he widely bursts in tears and swollen suffocation. However, the yellow-bellied character would not go down so easily… before jumping into round 2, he gulps down a container with warm wax; as the wax dries up, Homer’s mouth becomes isolated and chili-proof, and thus he proceeds to gobble several spicy chilli’s.

homer’s mystical journey 1

This is where the video excerpt picks up,  as Homer eats several chili’s, much to everyone’s amazement. Certainly, Homer’s mouth was isolated, however he forgot a crucial technicality… his stomach wasn’t. Influenced by chili hot overdrive, the protagonist unknowingly proceeds on the farthest journey, all of a sudden. He experiences intense hallucinations which arguably provide one of the most memorable passages in 18 years of Simpsons history. So when you come back to your regular affairs after checking out your daily slice of life, make sure to remember that 1) Take it easy on the chili 2) Don’t take it easy on getting to know yourself.

admin July 22nd, 2007

If you’re looking for a cool present for modern-age teenagers, you can’t go wrong with today’s slice. Check out these cool novelty PC Joypads from the amazing online store DealExtreme. There are two designs available: dragon and samurai, both of which are quite inexpensive ( especially because this store provides worldwide free shipping). As I browsed through the catalog these products readily caught my eye, and brought along nice memories of when I was a younger gamer. Nowadays, I’d hardly be interested in getting one of these for myself, but I think they’d make nice presents for my nephews. Besides, they’re quite cheap, and they look pretty sturdy - check it out yourself, by clicking the pictures. Have fun!

The simpsons intro compilation!

admin July 22nd, 2007

Have you noticed how each episode in “the Simpsons” show starts with slightly different opening credits, where something different happens when the family rushes towards the couch and sits in front of the TV? Well, you *must* have noticed, otherwise you must not really have watched the show ever, or possibly you have memory deficit disorder.

Whatever may be your case, today’s slice will provide you with bewildering, sagacious insight into the reason why “The Simpsons” is in all truth a beacon in 20th century pop culture. This collage of videoclips provides IMO a clear exhibit of the creativity and genious behind a TV show that has largely grown over the years into an institution of sorts; an institution of cartoon history, and modern-age social commentary. Grab an unit of your favorite bebeverage, lean back and relax, because today’s slice will give you a taste of frantic, yellow, non-sequitur amusement.

What is your favorite single skit, from within this collage? I’m a bit of a grandeur delusionist myself, so mine is obviously the biggest one, where the camera zooms out from the simpsons house, showing the earth, the solar system, the universe, until then….

… oh you’ll know, soon enough. Even as the realization dawns upon you, enjoy this daily reminder of why we like it here, and don’t forget that when it comes to enjoyment, life is all that better if you don’t put all of your eggs on the same basket! Honest!

Why not drink another beer? Maybe it will do you good!

admin July 21st, 2007

This is a parody to the video I posted yesterday. It’s equally insightfull, even tough it’s somewhat blunt; all in all, it could be reasoned this video elevates the noble spirit of “wear sunscren” to a whole new dimension of harsh cynical down-to-earth realism! It’s true, I actually believe it elevates the spirit of the original video by putting it down! Such is, my children, the triumphally tragic power of parody, once you think of it. Anyway, I’ve realized there are a few other noteworthy parodies that I’ll track down and post in the next few days, so if you enjoy this, stay tuned to Slices of Life: The daily reminder of why we like it here!

(If someone know a live link to the video, please let me know)

Wear sunscreen, would you?

admin July 20th, 2007

Relax, I’m not going to preach on the long-term benefits of wearing sunscreen, when you go to the beach. Not because I don’t believe in such benefits, but rather because I’m not the sort of person who believes in preaching… I’d rather believe in freedom of speech. Anyway, today’s slice is one of the most emblematic reminders of why it’s great to be around. “Everybody’s free” to wear sunscreen is a music video by Baz Luhrman (of Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge fame); while most people have heard this music at a point in their lives, not everyones knows it was based off an essay titled “Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young”, which was devised as the ultimate commencement address. (For more relable in-depth info on this side-story check out the wiki article - that’s where it’s at)

Not only is this an excellent music with a powerful positive inspirational message, it’s also a song with strong affinity to the over-arching theme which I’m trying to create in this website - daily reminders of reasons of enjoyment, from the essential to the frugal. In my opinion (authorship notwithstanding), wear sunscreen is a superbly articulate expression of seasoned wisdom. There’s not one statement in this message to which I don’t subscribe wholeheartedly, and furtherore there are certains passages which just seem to keep recurring up in my mind in the most appropiate moments. I’ll leave you with the video plus the lyrics, and hopefully this will help you smile today.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’99 :
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.

The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience…I will dispense this advice now. Continue Reading »

The Periodic Table of the Internet!

admin July 19th, 2007

Periodic table… of the Internet.

This guy called W. Grey  came up with the really cool idea of making a periodic table of the Internet, and the result is a chart which is shocking full of great resources. This is the one periodic table that you won’t hesitate scrutinizing for personal enjoyment; even tough you’re bound to be familiar many of the links there, chances are you will find some nice surprises - I know I have.

Similarly to the periodic table of elements, there are XVII groups in this table, ranging from Search Engines, to Internet Tools, Site Ranking, Aggregators, Webcomics, Productivity, Get Stuff, Operating Systems, Miscellaneous, Blogs, Social Networking, Podcasts, Videos, and News. While I doubt this chart provides a 100% reliable reference of the most popular sites on the Internet, it’s still a nice way of learning what’s hot in the vast cyberspace realms, nowadays. Definitely worth checking out; click here to see the full table, complete with links! Congratulations to Mr. Grey for a great idea!
