See the ugly critters above? Looks like something straight from outer space ( or at least a bad sci-fi movie), right? Well, it turns out this eerie beast, suggestively titled the “Garadiavolo” or “devil’s face” is nothing other but the innocent protagonist of a fascinating scientific scam, authored by one fearless explorer / con artist called Aufredo Garcia Garamendi.
During one of his expeditions in Porto Rico in 1974, Mr. Garamendi claimed that he was attacked by one of this horrible creatures, which allegedly tried to choke him. The bold adventurer escaped by a close shot, since he barely managed to take out his dagger and kill the beast dead, which he then baptized Garadiavolo. He took the beast home as a trophee, and later on he would be visited by some CIA agents who would have taken the Garadiavolo away. As result, a huge mystery was set, and many people were enticed with the possibility that it was a sort of alien animal or even an unknown specied.
…….or so the story goes. Truth of the matter was, Mr. Garamendi must have been acquainted with some local scam artists, who know how to take an unsuspecting Ray fish (such as the one in the picture bellow) and turn it into alien-like beast by making a few strategic cuts and letting the poor fish dry out in the sun. This is a really effective trick because the fish’s nostrils actually look like some devilish eyes, once dried out. All in all, this is nothing but a local Puerto Rican curiosity which a smart explorer conveniently turned into a huge mystery. Makes you wonder, eh?
