This is probably my favourite movie from Texan movie director Richard Linklater. Besides the cool visual style (the movie was animated over film using a cutting-edge “rotoscoping” technique), this is a truly thought-provoking movie, particularly for viewers with existentialist tendencies.
“Waking Life” is just about what the name implies. The main character is a young man who keeps living trough peculiar situations and interacting with weird characters, only to realize that he’s actually having a recurrently lucid dream: he keeps waking up only to realize that he’s still dreaming.
Troughout the movie, the author spares no moment to express his own thoughts regarding life, death and the nature of dreams. There’s not much action going on; waking life is just about people getting to know themselves as they interact with others…. not too much unlike life, one might add.
